Our dated changelog page appeared in hundreds of live ChatGPT answers. Most of the site was never fetched. I used to tell clients that better content would close that gap. I was wrong: the blind spot was knowing which pages an assistant actually pulled into an answer.

This list is for owners who want their pages cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, not just a visibility score that wiggles. The nine tactics are ordered by impact, and each has a check you can run. **A fetch is evidence of interest, not proof of a citation:** pair the log or edge record with the answer and its link. A search crawler indexing a page, a user-fetch agent requesting it and an assistant citing it are three different events. Keep those scoreboards separate.

## 1. Stop blocking the bots that fetch live answers

Start with robots.txt. If you want [ChatGPT search citations, allow `OAI-SearchBot`](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots). OpenAI uses separate crawlers for separate jobs: `GPTBot` relates to training, while `OAI-SearchBot` crawls for search. You can block the first if training is your concern without blocking the second. [Claude and Perplexity also distinguish search crawlers from training crawlers](https://pages.citepoint.ai/articles/robots-txt-for-ai-crawlers). That distinction matters more than another afternoon polishing a page nobody can reach.

**Check the access before you judge the content.** Filter 14 days of server or edge logs for `OAI-SearchBot`, `ChatGPT-User`, `Claude-SearchBot`, `Claude-User` and `PerplexityBot`. Search-bot hits show discovery; [user-fetch hits show an on-demand request](https://medium.com/@eliranyihye_cl/what-ai-crawler-logs-showed-us-bots-vs-fetches-ece3562f1b7e). Neither alone proves the page was cited. If you see `GPTBot` but no permitted search-bot access, inspect the rules before diagnosing an editorial failure. First step: allow the search crawlers you want, keep `GPTBot` disallowed if that is your training preference, then check whether the search bots return.

## 2. Publish a dated page that answers a question changing now

Our edge data made this one hard to ignore. A dated changelog page was pulled into hundreds of live ChatGPT answers while most of our site went untouched. Same domain. The useful difference was a current, specific answer: a date in the title, numbers in the body and information a generic service page could not supply.

The freshness pattern shows up beyond our logs. [About 70% of Perplexity’s top-cited content was published or updated within the preceding 12 to 18 months, and cited content across 17 million AI citations averaged 25.7% fresher than traditionally ranked content](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ai-overviews-now-answer-most-local-searches-how-to-get-your-business-cited/580757/). That does not mean a new date rescues a thin page. It means an assistant answering a current question needs a current answer.

**Compare the dated URL with the evergreen one.** Over 30 days, look for `ChatGPT-User` and `Perplexity-User` requests to each page, then check whether the dated page appears as a linked citation in the answers you track. First step: choose one buyer question that changes yearly, put the year in the title and an update date on the page, and set a quarterly refresh reminder. Make the update worth fetching.

## 3. Put the answer in the first 100 words

I have watched useful pages bury the answer under a brand story, three paragraphs of context and a warm welcome. An assistant looking for a passage to cite has better things to do. [Perplexity reads roughly 10 candidates and cites 3 to 5; 90% of its top citations answer the core question within the first 100 words](https://www.broworks.net/blog/how-do-perplexity-chatgpt-and-claude-choose-what-content-to-surface). For ChatGPT, 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of page content. Put the quotable part where it can be found.

Write _BLUF_: bottom line up front. Answer the buyer’s question in one sentence. Give the relevant number or date in the next. Then explain the conditions. If the question is what garage-door leads cost in Dallas, the opening needs the range and the month, not a paragraph about your commitment to service.

**Check what the fetcher can read, then check the answer.** View the page as text and count the words before the answer; a server hit will not tell you which sentence the assistant used. First step: rewrite your top buyer page so words 1 to 60 contain the answer you want a citation to support.

## 4. Give each buyer question its own page

I used to pack every related keyword into one service page. That helped me build pages for rankings. It is a lousy way to give an assistant one clean answer to a specific prompt. When a page covers five buyer questions, the relevant passage has to compete with four others. A narrow page gives retrieval a clearer candidate: **one prompt, one URL, one answer up top**.

The test is not whether you can make three URLs out of one. It is whether buyers ask three distinct questions and each page can answer one properly. Run the same buyer prompt in ChatGPT and Perplexity with browsing available. Check which of your URLs, if any, gets a user-fetch request within the hour, then inspect the linked sources in the answers. A fetch without a link is still useful evidence, but it is not a citation win.

First step: take your highest-margin service and identify three questions buyers actually ask. Give each a page with its answer at the top. Do not split a useful page merely to manufacture URLs.

![Server log showing AI bot fetches alongside page requests](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/3066507c-2355-46d0-b561-df4a6960aa2e.png)

## 5. Make your business facts agree everywhere

Assistants cross-check what they find. If your website lists one set of hours and a directory lists another, you have made the easy answer harder to trust. The boring fix is [consistent name, address, phone and service categories, with quarterly checks across Yelp, Google, Bing and Apple Maps](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ai-overviews-now-answer-most-local-searches-how-to-get-your-business-cited/580757/).

I have seen a home-services client lose local AI Overview citations for weeks while its website said 8am to 6pm, Google Business said 9 to 5, and Yelp carried an old phone number. The competitor’s details agreed. That is the sort of problem no amount of clever introductory copy fixes.

**Test the facts and the citation separately.** Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for your hours, address and core service in separate prompts. Record what each says and which pages it links. Then inspect your logs for requests to your own pages around those tests; a third-party directory citation will not appear as a fetch of your site. First step: audit those four directories and correct the mismatches you find. Make the right answer easy to verify.

## 6. Show up on pages assistants already cite

Your site is not the whole evidence pool. In branded queries, [owned content accounts for about 23% of citations and off-page sources for 77%](https://dev.to/juanauriti/youtube-is-the-1-cited-domain-in-google-ai-overviews-reddit-is-2-your-blog-is-nowhere-5fi). Across more than 3 million queries, YouTube at 22.9% and Reddit at 18.5% lead the cited domains in Google AI Overviews. That stings if you just rebuilt your blog. It also gives you a better next move than publishing another general service post.

Put real customer evidence where buyers can encounter it. A customer video on YouTube can name the service and city in its title. A detailed Reddit discussion can give the price and what happened. Neither is a shortcut you can force, and your own server logs cannot tell you when an assistant fetched someone else’s platform.

**Use the answer itself for the off-site check.** Ask Perplexity a buyer question in your category and record the cited domains. For a Google AI Overview, inspect its visible links too. If YouTube and Reddit own the answer and you have no useful presence there, that is where the next effort goes. Start with evidence a customer would recognize, not a post written for a crawler.

![Bar chart showing YouTube and Reddit ahead of brand blogs in AI citations](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/36b8b91c-a1b9-48d2-a593-73a5bcb36de2.png)

## 7. Check what ChatGPT and Perplexity fetch differently

One page does not have to choose a favorite assistant, but you should not assume the two fetch it on the same schedule. [Perplexity uses real-time retrieval and weighs freshness, while ChatGPT blends existing knowledge with search when a question calls for current information](https://www.broworks.net/blog/how-do-perplexity-chatgpt-and-claude-choose-what-content-to-surface). A date, price or statistic near the top helps a current-answer page make its point quickly. A clean definition and clear steps help a page stand on its own when the assistant checks it.

I write for the question first, then watch what each tool does with the page. **Compare agents by URL, not by a blended AI-traffic total.** Filter `PerplexityBot` and `OAI-SearchBot` crawl requests for the same pages, and keep user-fetch requests in a separate view. If one crawler returns to a fresh edit before the other, you know which system has had a chance to discover it. You do not yet know which will cite it.

First step: pick one recently updated buyer page and compare its crawl and user-fetch records with the citations in your tracked ChatGPT and Perplexity prompts. Plan the next edit around the gap you can actually see.

## 8. Fix the page the bot receives, not just the page you see

A page can look excellent in your browser and offer an extractor an empty shell. The first blockers I check are rendering and canonicals, followed by the response the server actually sends. [AI crawlers and fetchers often read raw HTML rather than running JavaScript, so browser analytics can miss their activity](https://medium.com/@eliranyihye_cl/what-ai-crawler-logs-showed-us-bots-vs-fetches-ece3562f1b7e). If the answer appears only after client-side scripts load, make it available in the delivered page. If a buyer page points its canonical at a different variant, check which URL you intend to make the source.

For Google AI Overviews, [a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet; there is no separate technical switch or special schema](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ai-overviews-now-answer-most-local-searches-how-to-get-your-business-cited/580757/). Google indexing is not a log record proving an AI Overview used your page. Check the visible Overview citation for that.

**Separate discovery from readability.** In your server or edge logs, compare search-crawler requests with user-fetch requests, including the URL and response. A crawler hit with no later user fetch does not, by itself, diagnose an extraction failure. First step: open your top buyer page with JavaScript off. If the answer disappears, fix what the server delivers before writing another paragraph.

## 9. Track buyer prompts and match citations to fetches

Rankings are a poor substitute for looking at the answer. Across 863,000 SERPs, [only 37.9% of AI Overview citations ranked in the top 10, down from about 76% in July 2025](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ai-overviews-now-answer-most-local-searches-how-to-get-your-business-cited/580757/). A page below the top 10 can be cited while a higher-ranked one is skipped. So I track 12 buyer prompts, not 12 keywords.

Run the same prompts every Monday in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Log whether your business is named, whether a page is linked, which URL gets the link and which competitor appears instead. Then match the ChatGPT and Perplexity results to your server or edge records. [Live-answer fetchers deserve their own filter](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots); they do not behave like routine crawlers. For an AI Overview, keep the visible citation check distinct from your crawl log. **A higher rank with zero observed citations is not the win you came for.** For the longer version of the retrieval problem, read [why ChatGPT and Perplexity cite some pages](https://groas.com/post/how-chatgpt-and-perplexity-actually-choo) and [how assistants choose which business to cite](https://groas.com/post/how-ai-assistants-decide-which-business).

First step: make the 12-prompt sheet and establish what is cited now. If I had only a week, though, I would go straight back to entry 1. Allow `OAI-SearchBot` and confirm its requests in the logs; publish one dated buyer page with the answer in the first 60 words; fix the business facts that disagree. That order is cause and effect. Access comes before a useful fetch. A useful answer comes before a citation worth tracking. The third-party push can wait until those checks pass. It is the unglamorous work [winning the live fetch](https://groas.com/post/how-to-get-your-business-cited-in-chatgp) requires, and the work groas runs daily for clients who would rather not grep logs at midnight. Start with the blocked door: if the search bot cannot get in, the rest of this list has nowhere to go.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How can I check whether AI assistants can access and read my page?

Check robots.txt to allow the search crawlers you want, such as OAI-SearchBot, and inspect the page the server delivers. GPTBot relates to training, while OAI-SearchBot crawls for search, so you can block GPTBot without blocking OAI-SearchBot. Test with JavaScript off to see whether the answer remains visible in the delivered page.

### When should I create a dated page instead of updating an evergreen page?

Create a dated page when buyers ask a question whose answer changes over time and you can provide current, specific information. Put the year in the title, add an update date, and set a quarterly refresh reminder. Compare its requests and linked citations with those for an evergreen page.

### How soon should I answer the main question on a page?

Put the answer in the first 100 words, with the relevant number or date near the top. The article reports that 90% of Perplexity’s top citations answer the core question within those first 100 words, and that 44.2% of ChatGPT citations come from the first 30% of page content.

### Should I make a separate page for each buyer question?

Give each distinct buyer question its own page when you can answer it properly, with the answer at the top. A page covering several questions makes the relevant passage compete with the others. Do not split a useful page just to create more URLs.

### Which business details should I keep consistent across directories?

Keep your name, address, phone number, service categories, and hours consistent across your website and Yelp, Google, Bing, and Apple Maps. Check the directories quarterly, then ask ChatGPT and Perplexity about your hours, address, and core service to see what they say and which pages they link.

### What should I do if AI answers cite YouTube or Reddit instead of my website?

Create useful customer evidence on the platforms appearing in the answers. A customer video on YouTube can name the service and city in its title, while a detailed Reddit discussion can describe the price and what happened. Check cited domains in Perplexity answers and visible links in Google AI Overviews.

### How can I compare ChatGPT and Perplexity fetches for the same page?

Filter PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot requests by URL, and keep user-fetch requests in a separate view. Perplexity uses real-time retrieval and weighs freshness, while ChatGPT blends existing knowledge with search when a question calls for current information. A crawler returning to a page shows discovery, not proof of a citation.

### How should I track whether AI assistants cite my pages?

Run the same 12 buyer prompts every Monday in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Record whether your business is named, which URL is linked, and which competitor appears instead; then match ChatGPT and Perplexity results to server or edge records. Check visible citations separately for Google AI Overviews.
