Cheap ChatGPT clicks are not a win if the orders lose money. For most ecommerce stores testing the channel, my pick is a done-for-you manager that runs ChatGPT alongside Google and Bing under one flat fee. That puts groas first: its Search Ads service costs **$1,499 a month with no cut of spend**, and the job is to connect a conversation to an order you can see in Shopify, not a click you have to take on faith.

I have run Shopping accounts long enough to know how this goes wrong. Someone shows you cheap clicks from a new surface and a blended ROAS that looks fine. Then returns, shipping, and a 25% margin eat the whole thing. So I ranked six ways to buy ChatGPT ad management on one test: **can the provider show an order at your margin without running ChatGPT in a silo?**

First, the surface you are buying. ChatGPT ads are [sponsored cards below the answer, separate from the organic response](https://www.wordstream.com/blog/chatgpt-ads). OpenAI announced plans on January 16, 2026, began a US test on February 9 for Free and Go plans, then opened self-serve Ads Manager to all US businesses on May 5. Ads appear on Free and Go, not Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise. Stores are reaching the free-user audience first, not every ChatGPT user.

You do not buy a keyword, either. You supply _context hints_: short descriptions of conversations where an ad belongs. OpenAI matches them by meaning rather than exact match. Its relevance-weighted second-price auction can favor a more relevant ad over a higher bid. Objectives include Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC), and Conversions via oCPC, where you still pay per click. A close product-to-query match can help a store. Without order tracking, though, a vendor can hide behind relevance and cheap clicks.

## The test behind the ranking

**Order-level tracking comes first.** For ecommerce, I want Pixel plus Conversions API, a shared event ID for deduplication, and the Conversion event type Order Created. Do not paste the pixel call directly onto the confirmation page. Push the order to the dataLayer so tag manager fires after pixel initialization, with the amount in minor units: [$129.99 becomes 12999](https://conversiontracking.io/blog/openai-chatgpt-ads-conversion-tracking/). Shopify checkout blocks direct tag access and needs a custom pixel; WooCommerce has its own data layer format. OpenAI grades sources daily for stripped click references, thin identity, late server events, and duplicates. Lose the click ID in a redirect and the purchase will not attribute. If a provider cannot explain that setup plainly, I would not trust its sale count.

![A shop receipt printed as a chat transcript instead of line items](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/1ab6674f-022a-4db9-b57d-c7b66fed9c89.png)

Next comes **margin, not ROAS alone**. Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by gross margin. [Shopping ROAS ranges from 3:1 to 6.5:1, with apparel near 6.1x and electronics near 3.8x](https://foundrycro.com/blog/google-shopping-benchmarks-by-category-2026/). At a 25% gross margin, you need 4x just to break even before shipping and returns. Platform ROAS can also overstate true incremental impact by 2x to 5x across large measurement studies. I would not scale because clicks look cheap. I would scale when orders hold up after the costs that matter to the store.

The remaining filters are product-to-page matching, a small test with approval before scaling, and one strategy across Shopping and ChatGPT. Product titles, descriptions, and inventory should flow from Shopify rather than be rebuilt as ad creative. Retailers can connect catalogs for automated sponsored shopping results, while [organic shopping suggestions are selected independently of ads](https://blumint.co/blogs/shopify-chatgpt-shopping-recommendations). The official [ChatGPT Ads for Shopify app connects catalog and commerce-event data](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001523-set-up-chatgpt-ads-for-shopify) to keep inventory aligned.

The US minimum is $25 per campaign per day, and OpenAI recommends a starting max CPC bid of $3 to $5. A focused test can start at $25 a day; $40 to $50 a day puts a month around $1,200 to $1,500 for stronger learning. At $4 CPC, $1,200 buys about 300 clicks. At a 4% conversion rate, that is about 12 orders. Anyone asking for $5,000 before checking what those orders are worth is selling confidence, not media.

## 1. Done-for-you management under one fee

**For:** stores doing, say, $30k to $500k a month that need orders tracked, not decks. **What it does better:** it puts ChatGPT inside the same search strategy as Google and Bing, with bids, keywords, and budgets worked around the clock and [a landing page for every ad group](https://groas.com/pricing). groas offers [Search Ads covering Google, Bing, and ChatGPT for $1,499 a month, with no cut of spend, no setup fee, and month-to-month terms](https://groas.com/pricing).

That fee structure is why I put it first. Management revenue does not rise when media spend rises, so a losing test does not need to grow to grow the fee. **What rules it out:** if your bottleneck is a team living inside TikTok comments and producing UGC angles all day, this is not that shop. Skip it when creative volume matters more than order proof. For the store I am ranking here, having one owner for the test, tracking fix, and scale decision is the point.

## 2. Shopping specialists adding ChatGPT

**For:** catalog stores with messy feeds, lots of SKUs, or variant sprawl. **What they do better:** feed hygiene. Titles, availability, GTINs, image rules: the unglamorous work that decides whether a product ad shows at all. A good Shopping specialist already thinks in margin-based product groups. That gets you halfway to a useful ChatGPT test.

**What rules them out:** ChatGPT is usually an add-on. You can end up with a Google-first playbook, a small conversational test bolted onto it, and tracking that lags by weeks. Early ChatGPT clicks can look cheap at [about $5 versus $30 to $50 for similar software clicks on Google](https://martech.org/chatgpt-has%20plenty-of-advertisers-but-not-much-revenue/). A thin test is easy to mistake for a winner when nobody has tied those clicks to orders. Hire this specialist to fix the feed. If you need one owner proving the new channel from week one, keep looking.

## 3. Performance agencies charging a percent of spend

**For:** larger stores that want a full team and do not mind paying for it. **What they do better:** process. Weekly calls, roadmaps, creative requests, reporting packs. Those things have a place once you know what works.

**What rules them out:** the math before you have proof. Typical price clusters run [$1,500 to $3,000 a month for small businesses, $3,000 to $10,000 for specialist work, and custom pricing above that](https://www.gptadsai.com/). Percent models can run at 15%, or on tiers from 30% down to 10% depending on term. On $40k in spend, a 10% to 15% fee is $4k to $6k a month before creative. That is why I stopped recommending percent pricing years ago.

When the fee rises with spend, a scale recommendation carries a conflict. A fixed retainer pays for the work rather than the media, so stopping an underperforming test does not cut the advisor’s fee. I get into that incentive gap in [why AI agencies keep the savings instead of passing them to clients](https://groas.com/post/ai-google-ads-agency-retainer-model-hidden-margin-problem). If your test budget is $1,200 and your margin is tight, do not buy an expensive reporting process before you have an order worth reporting.

## 4. DTC Meta creative shops branching out

**For:** stores where creative is the constraint: frequent drops, lots of UGC, and a steady need for new angles. **What they do better:** hooks, demos, unboxings, and the variant-testing cadence Meta trained them for.

**What rules them out:** a creative-first shop can bring Meta’s reporting habits with it. Thumb-stop rate, CTR, and blended ROAS tell me little about Order Created events, margin groups, or feed availability. I used to tell clients creative fixes targeting. I was wrong. In Shopping and ChatGPT product ads, the match between the query, product data, and landing page determines whether the right shopper reaches the right product. Creative cannot rescue a conversation with no buying intent. If your feed has 500 SKUs and nobody owns it, buy creative from this shop when you need it. Do not buy order proof from it.

## 5. Freelancers and course sellers

**For:** very small stores spending, say, $1,000 to $3,000 a month that want a low-commitment way in. **What they do better:** keep the owner close to the controls. You can run a $25-a-day focused test, approve changes yourself, and learn Ads Manager as you go. For some owners, that is worth the extra work.

**What rules them out:** coverage. One person cannot always watch search terms, feed errors, Pixel grades, and delayed server events across Google and ChatGPT. Early ChatGPT traffic is a rough place to discover a tracking gap: the auction is thin, intent is uneven, and some advertisers report visits lasting seconds rather than minutes. You pay for the lesson in media and in your own hours. I cover familiar feed and structure problems in [_8 Google Ads Mistakes Ecommerce Brands Keep Making_](https://groas.com/post/google-ads-mistakes-ecommerce-brands-shopping-feed-pmax-roas-fixes). If you cannot afford two weeks of bad data, low commitment is not the bargain it appears to be. This route is fine for learning, weaker for proving.

## 6. Doing it yourself in Ads Manager

**For:** owners already running Shopping profitably who want to see the ChatGPT interface firsthand. **What it does better:** speed to launch. Connect the Shopify app, choose all products or one hero product, set a budget and optimization event, and write context hints. No calls or onboarding.

**What rules it out:** you become the tracking team, feed team, and margin police. Shopify checkout restrictions, WooCommerce data layer quirks, stripped click IDs, duplicate events, late server events: all yours to debug. Without comparing performance against another surface, you also cannot tell whether a ChatGPT order is incremental or a Google order wearing a new label. If tracking setup sounds like a weekend project you will postpone, skip DIY. It is the cheapest way to start and the hardest way to know whether it worked.

## Five first-call questions that expose a weak test

I ask the same questions on a first call. **If the answer is ‘we’ll report on it later,’ I walk.**

1. Can you show an Order Created event with Pixel and server events deduplicated, rather than a screenshot of clicks?
2. What is my break-even ROAS at my margin for each product group, and where will you cap spend if we miss it?
3. Which landing page does each context hint point to, and who builds the page if the current one is thin?
4. What is the 30-day test budget per day, and do I approve a scale-up before you raise it?
5. Who owns Google Shopping and ChatGPT as one strategy?

The [mid-market ecommerce turnaround I have written about](https://groas.com/post/ecommerce-google-ads-turnaround-structural-fixes-recovered-roas-case-study) came from three boring fixes to feed, structure, and tracking. A new channel does not excuse skipping them.

## The pick changes less than the budget does

**Under about $20k a month in ad spend**, run a tight test or do not run one. Either DIY a $25-to-$50-a-day ChatGPT product test with approval gates, or hire the flat-fee done-for-you option so tracking and feed work do not consume your month.

**From $30k to $150k a month**, I pick the done-for-you manager under one fee. There is enough SKU complexity for a siloed ChatGPT freelancer to misattribute orders, while a percent-fee agency can charge $4k to learn what a $1,200 test should have taught you.

**Above $150k a month**, keep the same proof rule and add creative volume when you need it: flat-fee management for order proof, with a creative shop on a separate statement of work when product pages and angles are the constraint. Whatever the bracket, **no order proof, no scale**.

## What I left out, and my pick if you skipped here

I left out pure AI visibility dashboards: tools that track whether ChatGPT mentions your brand and call that advertising. They can help with organic questions. They do not buy media, set bids, fix feeds, or connect an Order Created event. For an online store choosing an ads provider, that rules them out.

If you skipped here, hire the provider that can show an order at your margin from a small approved test, with Shopping and ChatGPT run as one strategy. That is why the done-for-you, flat-fee manager stays first. groas runs Search Ads across Google, Bing, and ChatGPT for one flat fee, with continuous work and a named owner. A $1,200 test should end with readable order proof, not another report about cheap clicks.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I determine if the traffic from ChatGPT ads is actually profitable for my business?

Profitability must be measured after considering gross margins, shipping costs, and returns, as low ad costs do not guarantee a win. Scaling should only occur when the resulting orders hold up against these true operational costs, not just appearance of low clicks.

### What specific tracking setup is necessary to accurately attribute sales from ChatGPT ads?

To ensure accurate attribution, an advertiser must use a Pixel alongside a Conversions API and utilize a shared event ID for deduplication. The conversion event type used should be Order Created, and the monetary value must be entered in minor units for correct data processing.

### How does ChatGPT advertising differ from traditional search advertising methods?

These ads do not rely on purchasing specific keywords; instead, the advertiser supplies 'context hints' which are short descriptions of conversations where the ad should appear. The system matches these hints by meaning rather than by exact textual match.

### Why is relying solely on Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) insufficient for scaling a ChatGPT ad campaign?

Platform ROAS metrics can often overstate the true incremental impact of the advertising, so scaling based only on clicks is insufficient. Scaling decisions must be driven by confirmation that orders exceed the break-even point after accounting for margins and other operating costs.

### What is the minimum starting budget and recommended bid when running tests on these ads?

The US minimum for a campaign is $25 per day, and OpenAI recommends starting max CPC bids between $3 and $5. A focused initial test can begin with just $25 a day to gauge performance before considering larger investments.

### What type of agency model is best suited for initially proving the effectiveness of ChatGPT ads?

A done-for-you manager utilizing a flat fee structure is recommended for initial testing because the fee does not increase as media spend increases. This structure ensures that the test focus remains on order proof rather than growing management revenue.

## Paid Ads & SEO, Run For You

Businesses pay one flat monthly fee per service, agencies resell it under their own brand, and groas does the work either way.
