A founder or marketing lead with 90 days to chase AI citations should not split that time evenly between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. **They do not reward the same work.** Google AI Overviews draws on Google’s search index and often surfaces pages with existing organic visibility. Perplexity can fetch a clean, useful page quickly. ChatGPT Search looks to Bing results and what the wider web says about a business. Pick your first target based on what you already have: rankings, publishing speed, or a reputation other people have documented.

These are three contenders for the same team’s time, not one channel called _AI search_. An [analysis by Leapd](https://www.leapd.com/blog/chatgpt-vs-perplexity-vs-google-ai-overviews-citations) found only about 11% overlap between domains cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity. A page that works for one engine may give another very little to use.

I would make this choice on five axes: **source pool, speed, citation selection, measurement, and effort**. The table gives you the short version; the distinctions underneath tell you where to put the work.

## 1. Source pool: which engine can find you?

Most founders assume every AI engine searches the open web in roughly the same way. That assumption makes for a tidy pitch deck and a poor plan.

Google AI Overviews operates within Google’s search ecosystem. ChatGPT Search draws on Bing results. In an [analysis by Seer Interactive](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/how-chatgpt-search-will-shape-your-strategy), 87% of cited ChatGPT URLs matched Bing’s top 10 results, while 56% matched Google’s top 10. That is a reason to check your Bing visibility, not a reason to assume a Bing ranking guarantees a citation.

Perplexity uses live retrieval, drawing on indexed sources and pages it can fetch. A page it can reach and parse has a different opportunity there than it does in an engine leaning on established search visibility. For the broader intake process, see our breakdown of [how AI assistants decide which business to cite](https://groas.com/post/how-ai-assistants-decide-which-business).

**Practical takeaway:** Before rewriting a page, check whether your chosen engine has a plausible path to it.

![Diagram comparing the citation retrieval paths of Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT.](https://groas.com/media/blog/3aaead10e9774f5746c25497f38416e56ea44b48804040461722034b254d6d42.png)

## 2. Speed: how soon can you learn anything?

Say you publish a comparison page today. Perplexity’s live retrieval gives you a relatively quick chance to see whether the page gets fetched and quoted. ChatGPT Search can take longer to surface new material. In [MaxAEO’s tracking study](https://maxaeo.com/blog/time-to-citation-in-ai-search/) of 1,240 URLs, median time to first citation was four days on Perplexity and 13 days on ChatGPT Search. The study also measured six days on **Google AI Mode**, which is not the same product as Google AI Overviews. I would not use that figure as an AI Overviews deadline.

First citation is not durable visibility, either. The same study reported a median of 41 days to stable day-over-day citation persistence across the engines it tracked. If you publish on Monday and appear on Friday, you have a signal worth investigating, not a new permanent traffic source.

**Practical takeaway:** Use early citations to test whether a page is retrievable and useful. Keep watching before you call the result a win.

## 3. Selection: what makes a page worth quoting?

For Google AI Overviews, organic visibility matters, but _page one or nothing_ is too crude a rule. An [Ahrefs study](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-study-citations-ranking/) across 863,000 SERPs found that 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the organic top 10, 31.2% ranked from positions 11 to 100, and 31.0% ranked beyond position 100. Google can find a relevant passage outside the top results. Existing rankings still give you a sensible place to start because you have pages and queries to work from.

Where the answer sits also matters. [CXL found](https://cxl.com/blog/where-google-ai-overviews-pull-answers/) that 55% of cited passages appeared within the first 30% of a document. Kevin Indig found a similar placement pattern across ChatGPT citations: 44.2% came from the first 30% of text. That does not mean every page needs a formulaic opening paragraph. It means burying the answer beneath a long welcome speech makes the answer harder to extract.

Perplexity gives clean, directly useful material a shot: specifications, comparisons, pricing details, and answers a reader can lift without decoding the surrounding marketing copy. ChatGPT has another hurdle. An [AirOps and Erlin.ai analysis](https://erlin.ai/blog/chatgpt-search-optimization-guide/) found that ChatGPT Search cited 15% of the candidate pages it retrieved. Retrieval alone plainly is not enough; a business also needs to look credible beyond its own site.

**Practical takeaway:** Put a clear answer where an engine can find it, then ask whether your brand has the outside support that answer needs.

## 4. Measurement: what can you actually see?

Google Search Console does not separate AI Overview impressions from ordinary organic search in the way a marketer would want for this exercise. You can inspect answers for target queries and watch the broader search data, but you cannot treat a blended click figure as a clean AI Overview report.

Perplexity and ChatGPT can send identifiable referral traffic through `perplexity.ai` and `chatgpt.com`. That lets you inspect sessions and downstream activity in Google Analytics 4. It does not reveal every prompt that produced an answer, nor does it count a citation that nobody clicked.

The answers themselves move. In a [90-day MaxAEO study](https://maxaeo.com/blog/how-often-do-ai-answers-change/) of 1,247 buyer-intent prompts, daily brand-set churn was 27% for Perplexity, 18% for ChatGPT, and 13% for Google AI Overviews. A monthly screenshot can make ordinary movement look like a strategic breakthrough or a collapse. Both are expensive stories to believe without checking.

**Practical takeaway:** Pair repeated prompt checks with referral and conversion data. Neither view tells the whole story alone.

## 5. Effort: what does each first move demand?

For a site with useful Google rankings, AI Overviews is primarily an **existing-page problem**. Improve the pages already earning impressions: clearer headings, direct answers near the top, less duplicated or obstructive content, and technical fixes where needed. That is work, especially if changes need engineering help, but it starts with assets you own.

Perplexity is a **publishing and maintenance problem**. A team that can produce clean comparisons, current specifications, and unambiguous pricing information has something the engine can fetch and quote. The lower barrier to an initial test comes with more movement in the answers, so do not mistake a quick appearance for a position you can leave unattended.

ChatGPT Search is more of an **indexing and reputation problem**. You can improve Bing accessibility and your own pages. You cannot manufacture independent reviews, forum discussion, or trade coverage by changing an H2 in your CMS. If those outside signals do not exist yet, this is a larger job than rewriting a product page.

Here is the head-to-head scorecard:

| Decision axis | Google AI Overviews | Perplexity | ChatGPT Search |

| **Speed of first test** | Check relevant live answers; AI Mode timing is not an AI Overviews benchmark | Faster pickup in the cited tracking study | Slower pickup in the cited tracking study |
| **What to make quotable** | Relevant passages on discoverable pages | Clean comparisons, specifications, and current details | Clear pages supported by outside discussion |
| **What you can measure** | Live answers plus blended organic data | Live answers plus identifiable referral traffic | Live answers plus identifiable referral traffic |
| **First effort** | Improve pages with existing search visibility | Publish and maintain useful, easily parsed pages | Fix Bing accessibility and build on existing reputation |

**The cheapest first move is the one that uses an asset you already have.** Here is how that plays out for each contender.

## Google AI Overviews: start with the rankings you have

If your site already earns Google impressions for commercial queries, I would look there before commissioning another batch of _AI-optimised_ articles. Pull the pages that show up for those queries. Can a reader find the answer without scrolling through three screens of positioning copy? Can Google extract a clear comparison, definition, or specification?

An existing ranking is not a citation voucher. The Ahrefs figures make that clear: cited pages are not confined to the top 10. But rankings give you a working list of queries and URLs rather than a blank page. On a page that already attracts the right searches, moving a useful answer closer to the top is a more focused bet than publishing fifty new posts and hoping an overview notices one.

Our [guide to getting cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT](https://groas.com/post/how-to-get-your-business-cited-in-ai-ove) walks through that page-level work. **Use existing visibility as your starting advantage**, not as an excuse to assume the citation is yours.

## Perplexity: publish something it can quote now

Perplexity is the best first target for a business that can publish useful material quickly but has little established search footprint. Think of a vendor comparison with a readable table, a pricing breakdown that says what is included, or technical documentation that answers the question without making the reader sit through a sales pitch.

In the [TryProfound citation analysis](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/citation-overlap-strategy), Reddit featured heavily among Perplexity’s top citations, alongside technical documentation sites. Your own polished comparison page does not operate in a vacuum. It still has to be worth using next to other sources the engine retrieves.

The tradeoff is churn. In the MaxAEO prompt study, Perplexity’s cited brand sets changed more often than the other two engines’. If the details on your page age, a neat table will not save it. **Publish for a live question, then keep the answer current.**

![Illustration of a single web page balanced against a cluster of third-party reviews and media mentions.](https://groas.com/media/blog/bea067db8e18a88722316a9b081be3be5ddb0c652704ebbc974081f29d0bc43e.png)

## ChatGPT: your own site cannot do all the talking

ChatGPT Search is the awkward choice for a brand that has not yet been discussed elsewhere. You can write a sharp product page, make it accessible to Bing, and still have little independent context for an answer that recommends your business.

The [TryProfound analysis](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/citation-overlap-strategy) found Wikipedia prominent among ChatGPT’s top citations. The lesson for a commercial brand is not to chase a Wikipedia entry. It is that **outside sources matter**. Reviews, forum discussions, comparisons, and trade coverage give a prospective buyer more than your own claims to inspect. They also give an answer engine more than your own claims to draw on.

If that reputation already exists, make sure the basics are not getting in its way: check your important URLs in Bing Webmaster Tools and compare what your product pages say with the details people publish about you elsewhere. If the reputation does not exist, do not budget for a quick CMS-only fix and call it a ChatGPT strategy.

## The shared fix: answer first, then specialise

One change is worth making whichever contender you choose: **put the useful answer near the top of the page**. A direct definition, clear pricing detail, relevant specifications, or a compact comparison gives a retrieval system something it can quote. It also saves the human reader from hunting through throat-clearing. I used to treat a long introduction as harmless; on a page meant to answer a specific buying question, it is usually an obstacle.

That shared fix does not make the engines interchangeable. A readable page does not repair missing Bing visibility. It does not create third-party discussion. It does not give a new site the Google search presence of an established one. Do the shared housekeeping, then spend the rest of your time on the bottleneck your first target actually has.

## The verdict: pick the advantage you already own

### Already rank in Google? Pick AI Overviews

For a business with steady Google impressions on relevant commercial pages, **Google AI Overviews is my first pick**. Start with your highest-value URLs, particularly those appearing around positions 3 to 30. Replace vague lead-ins with a direct answer or useful table near the top, and check whether the live overview cites the page for the query you care about. The existing visibility makes this a focused test, not a promised result.

### Rank nowhere but publish fast? Pick Perplexity

For a challenger brand with little search visibility and a team that can publish current comparisons or documentation, **pick Perplexity first**. Its live retrieval makes it the clearest place to test whether a useful page can enter an answer before you have built years of organic rankings or outside mentions. Expect to revisit the page. Fast entry and lasting visibility are different jobs.

### Already get reviewed and discussed? Pick ChatGPT

For a business with substantial independent reviews, forum mentions, and trade coverage, **pick ChatGPT Search first** if Bing can find your important pages. In that case, the hard-to-create outside context already exists. The immediate work is checking accessibility and making your own product information clear and consistent with what others say. Without that outside record, I would start with one of the other two instead.

## What I would check in week one

Do not buy a monthly screenshot report before you know what a successful citation would look like. Give one contender a small, repeatable test:

1. **If you picked Google AI Overviews:** Choose 10 commercial queries where your pages already rank around positions 5 to 30. Improve the opening answer on the relevant pages, request re-indexing in Google Search Console, and check the live answers regularly. Keep the query and URL paired in your notes.
2. **If you picked Perplexity:** Publish two clean comparison pages with distinct, readable tables. Run the relevant vendor-comparison prompts, record whether either page is cited, and check GA4 for `perplexity.ai` referral sessions. Recheck rather than treating the first appearance as a permanent win.
3. **If you picked ChatGPT Search:** Confirm that your main commercial URLs are indexed in Bing Webmaster Tools. Run five buyer-intent recommendation prompts, record the sources the answers use, and check GA4 for `chatgpt.com` referrals. If your brand is absent, look at both indexing and the outside sources the answer draws on.

Our [one-person AI visibility playbook](https://groas.com/post/one-person-three-hours-a-week-under-100) sets out a lean way to keep those checks from becoming another dashboard ritual.

**My call:** if you already rank, start with Google AI Overviews. If you do not rank but can publish fast, choose Perplexity. Pick ChatGPT first only when other people are already doing some of the talking about you. Run a focused 30-day sprint on that engine, then judge what changed in citations, attributable traffic, pipeline, and revenue. Three simultaneous checklists will keep a team busy. One clear bet will tell you whether the work moved anything.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Which search index does each AI answer engine use to find pages?

Google AI Overviews operates within Google's search ecosystem. ChatGPT Search draws on Bing results and what the wider web says about a business, while Perplexity uses live retrieval from indexed sources and pages it can fetch and parse.

### If a page gets cited by ChatGPT, will Perplexity cite it too?

Probably not automatically. One analysis found only about 11% overlap between the domains cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, so a page that works for one engine may give the other very little to use.

### How long does it take to get a first citation after publishing a page?

In a tracking study of 1,240 URLs, the median time to first citation was four days on Perplexity and 13 days on ChatGPT Search. First citation is not durable visibility either: the median time to stable day-over-day citation persistence was 41 days.

### Do you need to rank in Google's top 10 to be cited in AI Overviews?

No. An Ahrefs study across 863,000 SERPs found 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the organic top 10, 31.2% ranked from positions 11 to 100, and 31.0% ranked beyond position 100. Existing rankings still give you a sensible starting point, but cited pages are not confined to the top results.

### Where on a page should the answer be placed to get cited by AI engines?

Near the top. CXL found 55% of Google AI Overviews citations came from the first 30% of a document, and Kevin Indig found 44.2% of ChatGPT citations in that same zone. Burying the answer under a long introduction makes it harder to extract.

### Is getting retrieved by ChatGPT enough to earn a citation?

No. An AirOps and Erlin.ai analysis found ChatGPT Search cited only 15% of the candidate pages it retrieved, so retrieval alone is not enough. A business also needs to look credible through sources beyond its own site, such as reviews, forum discussions, and trade coverage.

### Can you track AI Overview citations in Google Search Console?

Not cleanly. Google Search Console does not separate AI Overview impressions from ordinary organic search, so a blended click figure is not a clean AI Overview report. Perplexity and ChatGPT, by contrast, send identifiable referral traffic through perplexity.ai and chatgpt.com that you can inspect in Google Analytics 4.

### Which AI search engine should a business target first?

Pick the one that matches the asset you already have. If your site already ranks in Google, start with AI Overviews by improving existing pages. If you can publish useful material fast but rank nowhere, pick Perplexity. Choose ChatGPT Search first only if independent reviews and discussion about your business already exist.

Existing rankings still give you a sensible starting point, but cited pages are not confined to the top results."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Where on a page should the answer be placed to get cited by AI engines?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Near the top. CXL found 55% of Google AI Overviews citations came from the first 30% of a document, and Kevin Indig found 44.2% of ChatGPT citations in that same zone. Burying the answer under a long introduction makes it harder to extract."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Is getting retrieved by ChatGPT enough to earn a citation?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No. An AirOps and Erlin.ai analysis found ChatGPT Search cited only 15% of the candidate pages it retrieved, so retrieval alone is not enough. A business also needs to look credible through sources beyond its own site, such as reviews, forum discussions, and trade coverage."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Can you track AI Overview citations in Google Search Console?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Not cleanly. Google Search Console does not separate AI Overview impressions from ordinary organic search, so a blended click figure is not a clean AI Overview report. Perplexity and ChatGPT, by contrast, send identifiable referral traffic through perplexity.ai and chatgpt.com that you can inspect in Google Analytics 4."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Which AI search engine should a business target first?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Pick the one that matches the asset you already have. If your site already ranks in Google, start with AI Overviews by improving existing pages. If you can publish useful material fast but rank nowhere, pick Perplexity. Choose ChatGPT Search first only if independent reviews and discussion about your business already exist."}}]}]}
