Your best-converting landing page may be the wrong page to answer a buyer’s question in an AI Overview. Or it may be the best page you have, needing only a paragraph Google can lift. That is the dispute: one camp says to make existing money pages quotable; the other says sales pages and answer pages do different jobs. I think the decision depends on what your site already answers. **Fix the landing page for the query it already converts on. Build a new page only when no suitable page answers the question.**

I learned to be careful about asking a money page to do more. I used to tell clients to make it answer and close, until a page swap I approved tanked Quality Score and lifted CPA for three weeks before we rolled it back. That does not settle an organic citation argument. It does explain why I will not casually rewrite a page that brings in business. First, each side gets its strongest case.

## Position A: make the pages you already have quotable

The fix-it camp starts with the assets already on your site. In one analysis of [7,000+ evaluation-stage AI citations](https://www.tenspeed.io/blog/b2b-content-ai-overviews), owned content did much of the work across product pages, comparison pages, articles and homepages. Citations were not reserved for blogs. And over [90% of AI Overview citations pull from top-10 ranked pages](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). If a page already ranks for a buyer query, it has a head start that a new answer page does not.

That is the case for **passage-level surgery, not a page rebuild**. Keep the page and its commercial purpose. Under a relevant heading, put the answer where a reader can find it without hunting through a hero banner or a testimonial carousel. Put specs and prices in plain text rather than hiding them in images or a calculator. Use an H2 that matches the question, then answer it before you make the pitch.

Specificity matters. _Affordable pricing for every team_ sounds like landing-page copy because it is. A statement such as _[starts at $12/user/month with a 14-day trial](https://roast.page/blog/ai-overviews-landing-pages)_ gives a reader, and a system assembling an answer, something concrete to use. The point is not to paste a miniature FAQ under every heading. It is to stop making someone infer the answer from your sales language.

I know the PPC version of this trade. Change what a landing page says, and Quality Score can move because Google reassesses the page. For AI Overviews, the fix-it argument is that a passage must also say plainly what the page knows. If the answer is already on a ranking page but buried in copy written to persuade, the work is to expose it, not commission a second URL covering the same ground.

There is a practical reason to start here, too. There are [no additional technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond standard eligibility](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/optimize-for-ai-overviews): a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, while robots.txt blocks, noindex and nosnippet can take it out of contention. The fix-it camp would check those basics, then spend its effort on pages that already have a reason to rank. It would not create more content merely because a citation went elsewhere.

Its strongest instruction is simple: **before you build another page, see whether a ranking page can answer the query directly without getting worse at converting.**

## Position B: give buyer questions their own pages

The build-it camp objects to the phrase “without getting worse at converting.” That is the hard part. A landing page exists to close; an answer page exists to explain. When a buyer asks _how long does implementation take_, a hero banner, a testimonial carousel and a demo form do not answer. Add a long explanation above the form, though, and you may make the path harder for the buyer who already knows enough. What the deck calls synergy, I call asking one page to do two jobs badly.

I saw the underlying tension in paid search before AI Overviews existed. The page that converted best was rarely the page that explained most. That does not mean every useful answer belongs off the landing page. It means there is a limit to how much explanation you can bolt on before the page stops behaving like the page you meant to run.

The build-it mechanism is _query fan-out_. AI Overviews can [issue multiple related sub-queries per search](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/optimize-for-ai-overviews) and assemble an answer from passages addressing different parts of the question. Your pricing page might be the right source for _cost_. It is a poor home for a long answer to _how does this compare with doing it in-house_ or _what breaks during onboarding_. Those questions deserve room: a heading that names the issue, a direct answer up top and enough detail to make the page useful on its own.

That is why the build-it camp does not want the money page turned into an encyclopedia. It wants the commercial page to answer commercial questions clearly, while supporting pages handle the what, why and how. One rule from people who study [hundreds of Overviews](https://roast.page/blog/ai-overviews-landing-pages) is to keep landing pages pointed at commercial intent where the CTR impact is single digits, and move broader explanation to supporting content. The landing page can still state pricing, features and integrations in plain text. It just does not have to carry every question a buyer might ask before reaching it.

There is a conversion risk here that a citation plan can hide. I have watched a page get more informative while demo requests went down. Time on page rose; the form did not benefit. If the goal is revenue, “we answered more questions on the landing page” is not much of a defence. Review sites such as G2 and Capterra also get cited heavily, so the build-it camp would not pretend that cramming every answer onto one vendor page is the only route to visibility.

Its strongest instruction is equally simple: **if the answer needs space that would get in the buyer’s way, give it a page of its own.**

## The weak spot in each argument

Now the rebuttal. Side A breaks when one page is asked to answer twenty questions. BrightEdge data shows that the [overlap between AI Overview citations and organic rankings grew from 32.3% to 54.5%](https://searchengineland.com/why-content-doesnt-appear-in-ai-overviews-473325) between May 2024 and September 2025. Nearly half of citations in that comparison still came from outside the top rankers. A higher-ranking money page can lose to a page with a better-contained answer.

Sometimes the problem is obvious once you read the page as a stranger would. The heading promises an answer, then three paragraphs of context postpone it. The relevant sentence sits inside a long narrative, with no self-contained heading-and-answer unit. Or the page makes a claim without a clear author or first-hand experience behind it. Ranking gives the page a chance. It does not make a buried passage easy to use. **Authority is not a substitute for an answer.**

Side B breaks in the opposite direction. A cleanly formatted answer page does not arrive with the standing of a page that already ranks. A 400-word _Ultimate Guide to Widget Pricing_ on a domain with six indexed pages and zero links is not beating a vendor page, a Reddit thread and a G2 category page simply because it opens with a tidy paragraph. New pages start outside that top-10 pool. Build ten that sit uncrawled, unlinked and unranked, and you have spent the content budget on inventory nobody can find.

Nor does splitting every question into a separate URL solve a mismatch on the landing page itself. If a buyer searches for your price and your pricing page makes them work to find it, an unrelated answer page is an elaborate way to avoid fixing the obvious problem. **A new URL is not a substitute for a clear money page.**

The question, then, is not which camp has the prettier page template. It is whether the answer belongs on an existing page that can carry it without losing its job.

## Settle it with a content-gap check

I use a sheet, not an opinion. List the 15 to 20 buyer prompts you actually want to be cited for: questions someone might ask before shortlisting you. Write full questions about cost, implementation time, comparisons, what breaks and who the product is not for. Do not start with head keywords and assume you know which answers are missing.

Then map each question to the URL that answers it **directly today**. “We mention that topic somewhere” does not count. A reader should be able to land on the page, find the relevant section and get an answer without reconstructing it from claims scattered across the site. If two pages each do half the job, mark the match weak. If no page does it, leave the URL blank.

1. **Collect the prompts.** Use questions from sales calls and support tickets, plus People Also Ask and AI Overview sub-questions around your money terms.
2. **Record the best existing URL for each.** If two pages half-answer a prompt, record both and mark the match weak rather than pretending you have it covered.
3. **Tag the page’s job.** Does it already convert, as a landing, pricing or comparison page? Or does it explain, as a blog post, guide or doc?
4. **Choose the work.** If a converting page already addresses its own commercial query, tighten that passage. If no page answers the prompt, or the only possible home is a converting page that should not carry a long explanation, build a dedicated answer page.

That is the content-gap check. You can run it in a spreadsheet or in software; the important part is the judgement in each row. **Blanks get new pages. Weak matches get edits.** A row marked “covered” should have a URL you can defend, not a hopeful note about what the page might imply.

For a weak match, try passage surgery first. Open the relevant section with a [40- to 60-word answer capsule that stands alone](https://legiit.com/blog/dominating-ai-overviews-strategies-to-boost-ctr), then give the proof and the depth. Keep the citable unit to roughly 134 to 167 words under a question-matching H2. FAQPage or Article schema may help with parsing; neither guarantees a citation. If the page converts, make the smallest change that answers the question and keeps the offer easy to act on.

For a blank, build the answer page that way from the start. Link it from the closest commercial page instead of leaving it orphaned. The supporting page does the explaining; the money page stays pointed at the action the buyer came to take. That link also gives a reader a route between the two jobs, rather than forcing one page to perform both.

The citation is worth pursuing, but it is not the only measure. In one Seer update across 53 brands and 5.47M queries, [pages cited inside the Overview held about 2.1% CTR versus 0.9% for uncited pages](https://legiit.com/blog/dominating-ai-overviews-strategies-to-boost-ctr) on the same SERP, and cited brands earned far more downstream clicks. I would still rather protect a page that closes than win a citation by breaking it. You are chasing the click that follows the answer, not a logo displayed inside it.

![Cartoon courtroom: a sales landing page and an answer document argue before a judge](https://groas.com/media/blog/0cff2619b5e40a148d94fa14188784878799f0e1ed56d51483d166714d597afa.png)

## Verdict: fix what converts; build what is missing

I rule for the split. For a site with pages that already rank and convert, the **single deciding consideration is whether an existing page can answer the buyer’s question without sacrificing its conversion job**. If it can, fix that page. Give its relevant heading a direct answer, put the price and specs in plain text, and leave the offer and form doing what they already do. You are making an existing asset easier to use as a source, not promising yourself a citation.

If the prompt maps to nothing, build. Give it a standalone answer page with a question-matching H2, a direct answer up top, proof underneath and a link back to the closest money page. Do not disguise a long onboarding explanation as landing-page copy just to avoid creating a URL. And do not create a URL when the pricing page merely needs to state the price.

There is a reader who should skip the building half for now. If your site has fewer than about 10 indexable pages, I would treat authority as the more pressing problem. Ten thin answer pages on a site with little history will struggle against established sources. Put the effort into making your three money pages quotable first and getting mentioned where review sites already get cited. The gap sheet still shows you what is missing; it does not oblige you to publish every blank row tomorrow.

For everyone editing a converting page, keep a control. I run [dynamic landing pages that match search intent](https://groas.com/post/how-to-build-dynamic-landing-pages-google-ads-message-match-conversion-rate) on paid for a reason: templates let me test copy without casually breaking what converts. Duplicate the page or run the edited block on a template variant, keep the original live for half the traffic, and watch demo requests and CPA for two full sales cycles before calling it a win. Check citations alongside those measures, not above them. **Never rewrite a converting page to chase a citation without a control.**

Say you spend $20k a month driving to a page that closes at 3.1%. A passage edit wins three Overviews but the page now closes at 2.7%. That did not win. It taxed your paid search to fund your organic ego. Roll it back, move the longer answer to a supporting page and link the two.

So if you came here asking for the best software to optimise landing pages for AI Overviews, my answer is narrower than the question. Software does not decide which page should answer a prompt. The gap sheet does. Fix the three to five pages that already rank and close, build only for the blanks that need their own space, and leave the rest alone. I used to tell clients one page could do both jobs. I was wrong, and my Quality Score scar tissue is the receipt. **Make the page answer where it can. Do not make it stop converting to answer everything else.**

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Should I optimize my landing page for AI Overviews or create a separate answer page?

Fix the landing page when it already converts on the query and can answer the buyer's question without sacrificing its conversion job. Build a dedicated answer page only when no suitable page answers the question directly today. A content-gap check mapping buyer prompts to existing URLs is how to decide.

### How do I make an existing landing page quotable for AI Overviews?

Use passage-level surgery, not a page rebuild. Add an H2 that matches the buyer's question, open that section with a direct 40-60 word answer that stands alone, and put specs and prices in plain text instead of images or a calculator. Keep the offer and commercial purpose intact.

### Why not put every buyer question's answer on my landing page?

A landing page exists to close while an answer page exists to explain, and bolted-on explanation can make the page stop converting. Questions like how implementation works or what breaks during onboarding need space. Give them a dedicated page and link it from the closest commercial page.

### How do I decide whether to edit a page or build a new one for AI Overviews?

Run a content-gap check. Collect 15 to 20 buyer prompts from sales calls, support tickets, People Also Ask and AI Overview sub-questions, then map each prompt to the URL that answers it directly today. Blanks get new pages, weak matches get passage edits, and covered rows need a URL you can defend.

### Can editing a landing page for AI Overviews hurt conversions?

Yes. The article gives an example where a page swap tanked Quality Score and lifted CPA for three weeks before rollback, and another where a page got more informative while demo requests fell. Keep a control running half the traffic and watch demo requests and CPA for two full sales cycles before calling the edit a win.

### Should a small site build answer pages to get cited in AI Overviews?

If the site has fewer than about 10 indexable pages, authority is the more pressing problem. Ten thin answer pages on a site with little history will struggle against established sources. Make the three money pages quotable first and get mentioned where review sites already get cited.
