If you run a small business with money for one AI citation push, the contenders are Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT plus Perplexity. **They are not two names for the same job.** One builds on your Google rankings. The other asks whether your pages can be fetched and whether other sites mention you when a buyer asks for a recommendation.

I used to tell clients to publish better answers and let every engine pick them up. I was wrong. AI Overviews largely reward pages already ranking in Google; ChatGPT and Perplexity lean harder on off-site mentions and fresh pages they can retrieve. If you have some organic footing, AI Overviews are usually the cheaper first win. If you do not—or your buyers build shortlists in chatbots before touching Google—the choice flips.

## Axis 1: Google rankings versus retrievable mentions

Google AI Overviews draw on pages in the Google index. The official entry requirement sounds modest: a page must be [indexed and eligible to show a snippet](http://searchengineland.com/to-show-in-google-ai-mode-ai-overviews-your-page-must-be-indexed-456590). Eligibility is not the same as getting picked. Behind one question, an Overview can run a _query fan-out_: related sub-searches that surface supporting pages. A page that ranks for one of those sub-questions and answers it in a passage Google can lift has a clearer route in. That is why [ordinary SEO plus sub-question coverage does much of the work](https://www.rank.ai/blog/how-to-rank-in-google-ai-overviews).

ChatGPT and Perplexity take another route. [ChatGPT Search uses Bing’s index and OAI-SearchBot, while Perplexity uses its own live index and PerplexityBot](https://cited.so/blog/how-to-appear-in-ai-search-results). Blocking GPTBot for training does not block ChatGPT Search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, though, can keep your pages out of their answers. A polished answer page will not help an engine that cannot fetch it.

That creates two different checklists. For Overviews, ask whether Google already finds and ranks a page for the question and its related searches. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, ask whether the right bot can reach the page and whether retrievable third-party pages say anything useful about you. **Fix the source path before you rewrite the answer.**

## Axis 2: How much of your SEO work carries over?

A page-one ranking gives you a head start with AI Overviews. It does not guarantee a citation, but it puts an existing asset near the work Google is doing. The argument over [whether good SEO is already enough for AI citations](https://groas.com/post/is-good-seo-already-enough-to-get-you-in) has a practical answer here: keep the ranking, then make the page easier to quote. Give each relevant sub-question a direct 40- to 60-word answer block before the longer explanation. You are improving a page that already has a reason to be seen.

ChatGPT and Perplexity do not give your Google rankings the same carryover. In one 1,000-question B2B test, [74.1% of pages cited by AI engines were outside Google’s top 10](https://slatehq.com/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-chatgpt-perplexity-claude-and-gemini). Across 31,128 citations, the engines shared only 29 of the same pages, yet they named the same vendors 35% to 42% of the time.

That last contrast matters more than another round of formatting your blog. A citation is the page an engine points to; a recommendation is the business it names. Those can come apart. A buyer may see your company on the shortlist because a review, directory, forum, or roundup describes it clearly, even when your own blog never appears in the answer. If those third-party pages leave you out, another paragraph on your site will not put your name in them.

I would still keep the site useful and fetchable. I just would not mistake that for the entire chatbot job. **Existing SEO is carryover capital for Overviews; for ChatGPT and Perplexity, it is a starting ticket.**

## Axis 3: A quick citation is not necessarily a cheap program

If the goal is a first citation, speed points toward Perplexity. The cited estimates put [a first Perplexity citation at about 1 to 4 weeks, versus 4 to 12 weeks for an AI Overview after structural fixes](https://cited.so/blog/how-to-appear-in-ai-search-results). Perplexity can recrawl quickly. An Overview depends on Google indexing the change and selecting a page through its related searches. A fast first appearance, though, does not tell you how much work it takes to become visible across the questions that matter.

With Overviews, the work can concentrate on an asset you own. A ranking page that cleanly answers several related questions can support more than one Overview. With ChatGPT and Perplexity, the work spreads: make your own pages retrievable, then identify the outside pages that buyers and engines encounter. You can edit your site this afternoon. You cannot rewrite someone else’s roundup on command.

Do not bundle the two chatbots into one outreach plan, either. In one test, Perplexity cited Reddit 1,051 times across 617 questions, making it [its most-cited domain at 5.5% of links](https://slatehq.com/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-chatgpt-perplexity-claude-and-gemini); ChatGPT cited it zero times. For a category whose Perplexity answers draw on forums, those conversations deserve attention. For ChatGPT, you still need to check Bing visibility and whether the pages it can retrieve describe you accurately. The channels may share a budget, but not every task.

**A page upgrade may take longer to show up in Overviews than one Perplexity hit.** For a business with rankings, it can still be the smaller first investment because the work stays on a page the business controls.

## Axis 4: Visibility where buyers start, or a name on the shortlist?

AI Overviews sit above Google results. They can put your answer in front of people already searching, but they also give people a reason not to click. In Ahrefs data, [top-result click-through fell about 58% when an Overview appeared](https://pikaseo.com/articles/zero-click-search-ai-overviews-2026). Seer measured organic click-through falling from 1.76% to 0.61%, and a 2026 randomized test found outbound clicks down 38% as zero-click sessions rose from 54% to 72%. Being cited recovered some clicks compared with being left out, but cited pages still trailed queries without an Overview.

So I would not sell an Overview citation as a way to restore every lost visit. It is a way to show up inside an answer that may otherwise occupy the space above your listing. For local cost questions and _best-near-me_ searches, that presence can matter even when the search ends on Google.

ChatGPT and Perplexity can meet a buyer at a different moment: the shortlist question. The person asking which provider to consider may want fewer names and more confidence. One reported comparison puts [ChatGPT referral conversion at around 15.9%, versus 1.76% for Google organic](https://www.b2the7.com/news-blog/ai-search-customer-acquisition-small-business). That does not mean every chatbot mention will convert like a referral visit. It does explain why a small stream of referred buyers can be worth watching rather than dismissed for its size.

Say you spend $20k a month on ads and rank on page one for five money terms. If Overviews appear on those searches, defending your presence there is a more immediate use of one budget than chasing a chatbot mention for a question your buyers rarely ask. Reverse the buying journey—buyers ask for a shortlist in chat before they search—and the priority reverses with it. **Overviews defend visibility in Google; chatbot mentions compete for a place in the decision.**

## Axis 5: What can you actually measure?

Overviews are easier to observe than to claim. Search Console can help you follow impressions and clicks for the queries you care about, while manual checks tell you whether an Overview appears and cites your page. It will not hand you a clean count of citations or prove that every impression belonged to your answer. And when a search ends without a click, your analytics will not show the whole encounter.

ChatGPT and Perplexity have the opposite frustration. You can repeat buyer prompts and record when your name appears, then check referrals for visits. But answers can differ between users, and that traffic may be thin and uneven. A broad visibility score can make a weak result look tidy. I would rather know whether the business appears for ten commercial questions it actually wants to win.

The useful version of [AI visibility tracking for a small shop](https://groas.com/post/should-a-small-business-bother-monitorin) is deliberately narrow: keep the prompt list fixed, check it on a schedule, note the sources behind each answer, and compare it with the pages and mentions you changed. **Measure Overviews with query data plus citation checks; measure chatbots with a fixed prompt list plus referral checks.** Neither gives you a magic attribution number.

## Scorecard: the five decisions on one page

Here is the head-to-head for a small business with a site and a few existing rankings. **The winner changes when that organic footing disappears or the buyer’s shortlist moves to chat.**

| Axis | Google AI Overviews | ChatGPT + Perplexity |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Source path | Indexed pages selected through related Google searches | Retrievable pages and third-party mentions; Bing visibility matters for ChatGPT |
| SEO carryover | High when relevant pages already rank | Lower; Google rankings alone do not settle inclusion |
| First win | Page upgrades may take 4 to 12 weeks to appear | A Perplexity citation may arrive in 1 to 4 weeks, but mentions take outside coordination |
| Buyer moment | Google searches, including many that end without a click | Shortlist questions and potentially more qualified referrals |
| Measurement | Search Console trends and manual citation checks | Fixed prompt checks and referral traffic |

## Verdict: give AI Overviews the first budget if you already rank

For most small businesses with some organic footing, **AI Overviews win the first budget**. You have already invested in pages, links, and Google Business Profile work. The next step is to make the relevant ranking pages answer the related questions Google is likely to pull into an Overview. That is an edit to an asset you own, not a campaign to persuade several other sites to mention you.

I would start with the commercial queries where you already appear and an Overview now sits above the results. Check the related questions, then make the ranking page answer them plainly before it goes long. Do not turn every paragraph into a tiny answer box; make the passages a reader can use easy for an engine to find. If the page never had a relevant ranking, formatting alone will not manufacture that footing.

### When ChatGPT and Perplexity should go first

Pick the chatbot side instead if any of these describes the buying path:

- **You have almost nothing ranking in Google.** There is little existing search visibility for an Overview push to build on.
- **Your buyers ask chatbots for shortlists before searching.** Being absent from the names they consider is the more urgent gap.
- **Third-party lists and forums shape the category.** If the sources quoted for your money questions omit you, editing your own page cannot fix those sources.

Those are reasons to pick the other contender, not excuses to run two full programs on one budget. In particular, if Perplexity repeatedly quotes roundups and forums that leave your business out, work on the missing mentions. An on-page rewrite cannot add your name to somebody else’s page.

## The 30-day sequence I would use

One budget still needs triage. In week one, pull your top 20 commercial queries from Search Console. Search them in Google, mark the ones that trigger an Overview, and check whether your pages rank in the top eight for the relevant fan-out terms. That gives you an Overviews shortlist grounded in pages you can improve. Alongside it, run ten buyer-shortlist prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity and record where you are absent. You are looking for the larger, more immediate gap, not trying to manufacture a platform-wide score.

Then put the main effort behind the winner while covering the basic access checks for both:

1. **Days 1–7: fix retrievability.** Confirm the site is indexed in Google and Bing Webmaster Tools. Check that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and fix pages that block fetching or show their answer only through JavaScript. Do this before judging whether an engine likes the content.
2. **Days 8–18: if you have rankings, upgrade two pages for Overviews.** Give each relevant fan-out sub-question a 40- to 60-word answer block. Where the answer calls for one, use a number, a price range, or a named step, then follow it with the explanation. Work on pages already close to the questions; do not spread the budget across a site-wide rewrite.
3. **Days 19–30: pursue three relevant mentions.** Correct a directory profile, seek a supplier or partner page that names your service area, and look for a forum or listicle where the category already gets quoted. If your triage showed chatbot-first buyers and no Google footing, make this the main push rather than treating it as cleanup. Otherwise, stop after three and see whether the page upgrades hold before expanding outreach.

Pick the engine that pays back work you have already done. If Google ranks your pages, start with Overviews and defend your place in the answers above those results. If Google does not rank you and buyers build shortlists in chat, start with the mentions those answers draw from. Either way, do not buy another report telling you to be more quotable. Pages changed, bots allowed in, third-party pages fixed: that is execution. groas exists to do that daily grind continuously while a named strategist owns the outcome. [See what that operating model looks like](https://groas.com/) before you spend a second month deciding.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What's the difference between getting cited in Google AI Overviews versus ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Google AI Overviews draw on pages already in the Google index, and a page that ranks for related sub-questions Google runs behind one query has a clearer route in. ChatGPT and Perplexity instead depend on whether their bots can fetch your pages and whether third-party pages mention you when buyers ask for recommendations.

### Should I block GPTBot in robots.txt to control whether ChatGPT cites my site?

Blocking GPTBot affects training data, not ChatGPT Search results. ChatGPT Search uses Bing's index and OAI-SearchBot, while Perplexity uses its own index and PerplexityBot, so blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot is what can keep your pages out of their answers.

### Do my existing Google rankings help me get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Much less than they help with Google AI Overviews. In one 1,000-question B2B test, 74.1% of pages cited by AI engines were outside Google's top 10, and the engines shared only 29 of the same pages across 31,128 citations. Rankings are carryover capital for Overviews but only a starting ticket for chatbots.

### How long does it take to get a first citation in Perplexity versus Google AI Overviews?

Cited estimates put a first Perplexity citation at about 1 to 4 weeks, versus 4 to 12 weeks for an AI Overview after structural fixes. The faster first hit does not mean less work overall, though: Perplexity mentions require coordinating outside pages, while Overview work stays on pages you own.

### Do AI Overviews reduce clicks, and are chatbot referrals worth more per visit?

Yes on both counts. Ahrefs data found top-result click-through fell about 58% when an Overview appeared, and one reported comparison puts ChatGPT referral conversion at around 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic. A small stream of chatbot referred buyers can be worth watching despite its size.

### Should a small business with existing Google rankings spend its AI budget on AI Overviews or chatbots first?

AI Overviews are usually the first move when some pages already rank in Google, because the work is editing assets you own to answer related sub-questions clearly. ChatGPT and Perplexity should come first if you have almost nothing ranking, your buyers build shortlists in chat before searching, or third-party lists and forums shape your category.

### How can a small business track whether it appears in AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity?

For Overviews, use Search Console to follow impressions and clicks for target queries and run manual checks on whether an Overview appears and cites your page. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, keep a fixed list of buyer prompts, check it on a schedule, note the sources behind each answer, and watch referral traffic.
