Most agencies won’t tell you this: **getting cited in AI answers is not one channel**. If you run a local service business, sell B2B software or services, or operate an ecommerce store, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity are three contenders for your next buyer’s attention. They are not three doors into the same room.

I learned the cost of a one-plan-fits-all approach in paid search. Running Search and Performance Max off one plan never worked for me because the inputs, matching and reporting were different. AI citation has the same trap. Google draws on its index and ranks passages. ChatGPT can fetch pages while building an answer. Perplexity searches first and writes around visible footnotes. Same buyer question, different source lists.

This is a head-to-head for owners who have to choose where to start. I’ll compare how each engine finds you, what it lifts from a page, what the buyer sees, how quickly changes register and what to measure. My verdict up front: **start where your buyers already ask questions, then win that engine before chasing the other two.**

## The same question does not produce the same winners

Ask all three engines something a buyer might actually ask, such as “best scheduling software for a 10-person plumbing company.” You will not necessarily get the same names, let alone the same citations. In one long comparison of cited domains, [only 11% of domains were cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity](https://pikaseo.com/articles/youtube-overtakes-reddit-ai-citations). That is not a rounding error. It is a warning against reporting one blended _AI visibility_ score as if it describes one contest.

The difference begins with retrieval. [ChatGPT pulls largely via Bing, Google AI Overviews draws on Google’s index plus fan-out queries, and Perplexity uses its own crawler and index](https://surfer.ai/blog/llm-citations/). A page can be available to one engine, useful to another and absent from the third. **Same prompt, different retrieval pool, different citation.**

![Three podiums awarding citations differently for the same buyer question](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/e01ac6a6-554b-4637-8388-e64fba44d5bc.png)

## Axis 1: How do the engines find your page?

### Google AI Overviews: win the passage, not just the main query

Google starts with its index. It can split a search into related sub-questions, retrieve pages for those queries and assemble passages into an answer. That _query fan-out_ matters because ranking for the exact phrase does not settle every sub-question. I used to tell clients page one was the whole game. I was wrong. In an analysis of 10,000 keywords, pages that ranked for fan-out queries were [161% more likely to be cited than pages that ranked only for the main query](https://searchengineland.com/measure-brand-visibility-ai-search-464524).

In one ecommerce sample, AI Overviews [pulled 83% of citations from pages outside the organic top 10](https://geolikeapro.com/blog/google-ai-overviews-ecommerce). That does not make rankings irrelevant. It means a useful passage on a relevant page may have a route into the answer even when the page does not hold the old-fashioned number-one spot. **Give Google a direct answer to the adjacent questions buyers ask**, not just a page built around one headline keyword.

### ChatGPT: get retrieved, then give it something to quote

When browsing is on, ChatGPT can run related searches, assess candidates and open pages while constructing an answer. Its retrieval is largely [via Bing](https://suparank.io/get-cited-by-chatgpt/). One analysis found that [88% of cited URLs came through general search and 87% matched Bing top results, while ChatGPT cited only about 50% of the URLs it retrieved](https://suparank.io/get-cited-by-chatgpt/). Retrieval gets you into the room. It does not guarantee you a line in the answer.

The bot names describe different jobs: OAI-SearchBot relates to search-answer inclusion, GPTBot to training data, and ChatGPT-User to per-prompt fetches. In our own edge logs, ChatGPT-User accounted for the large majority of live-answer fetches to our homepage. That is one site’s log, not a universal market share claim. It is still a useful operational clue: **check whether the page gets fetched before rewriting it for the fifth time.**

### Perplexity: expect the sources to be on display

Perplexity puts search at the center of the experience. It generally runs [live retrieval, ranks sources and synthesizes an answer with inline numbered footnotes](https://llmpulse.ai/blog/how-perplexity-works/). The buyer can inspect the sources beside the answer instead of hunting for where a claim came from.

Perplexity documents [PerplexityBot for surfacing and linking pages and Perplexity-User for live fetches](https://llmpulse.ai/blog/how-perplexity-works/). Its search depth also varies: Best picks a model automatically, Pro Search can run multiple searches, and Reasoning Search and Research go further on hard questions. If a buyer is comparing a serious purchase, a thin page has more chances to be exposed as thin. **Give the reader enough substance to check your answer, not just a sentence designed to be lifted.**

![Cutaway showing Perplexity retrieving pages and attaching numbered footnotes](https://pub-87da24ecbbfc4c3bad6875f3aa013712.r2.dev/generated-images/bbb039db-e7f3-4ebb-99ad-375b303c7fe9.png)

## Axis 2: What kind of page earns the citation?

Google needs passages it can separate from the rest of the page. [Thirty-eight percent of its citations come from the first 100 words](https://surfer.ai/blog/llm-citations/). In the ecommerce sample, [68.7% of cited pages had a clean H1-H2-H3 hierarchy and 61% carried Product, FAQ or HowTo schema](https://geolikeapro.com/blog/google-ai-overviews-ecommerce). Pages on a 30-day refresh cycle earned 3.2 times more citations in that sample. None of this is a reason to bolt irrelevant schema onto every URL. It is a reason to put the answer where Google can find it and keep the details current.

I write money pages with the direct answer near the top, then the explanation and proof below it. If the first screen is throat-clearing, another page may supply the passage. **For AI Overviews, make each important section answer a plain buyer question.** Structure helps the engine find the passage; substance makes that passage worth using.

ChatGPT’s useful unit is smaller and more self-contained. In one analysis, [72.4% of lifted pages had a link-free, 20-to-25-word answer capsule directly under a question H2; 52.2% included original data](https://suparank.io/get-cited-by-chatgpt/). That is a page-writing pattern, not a command to force every answer into exactly 23 words. The point is to make a claim clear enough to quote without losing its meaning.

Discovery matters beyond your own site, too. Off-site mentions [correlated 0.66 to 0.71 with ChatGPT visibility, while own-site page count correlated at 0.194](https://suparank.io/get-cited-by-chatgpt/). I would rather have one useful page that other people discuss than ten posts that only repeat one another. That is not a promise that a few forum mentions will win you a citation. It is a reason to stop treating publishing volume as the whole plan.

Perplexity also benefits from a clear answer block, but its deeper searches can bring more of the surrounding topic into view. A page that states a recommendation and then explains the tradeoffs gives both the engine and its reader something to examine. **For Perplexity, make the footnote worth opening.**

## Axis 3: What does the buyer actually see?

Perplexity offers the clearest citation path: [inline numbered footnotes that readers can see and click](https://llmpulse.ai/blog/how-perplexity-works/). If your buyer uses it to compare options, a citation can sit right beside the claim you want them to consider.

ChatGPT can name sources, but the link and attribution are less predictable. Google AI Overviews can also use more material than it visibly credits. In one large sample, [61% of answers used more sites than they credited](https://surfer.ai/blog/llm-citations/). **You can help shape an answer and still get no link.** That is why I track mentions separately from citations. A buyer seeing your name on a shortlist is not the same event as a buyer clicking through to your page.

The traffic stakes can still be meaningful. In the ecommerce study, cited brands saw [around 35% more clicks than the old number one, while uncited number-one results lost 34.5% to 46.7% of click-through rate](https://geolikeapro.com/blog/google-ai-overviews-ecommerce). I would not use that sample as a forecast for every account. I would use it to reject the idea that citation tracking is only about seeing your logo in an answer.

## Axis 4: How quickly can a change show up?

ChatGPT and Perplexity can fetch a changed page while answering a later prompt. Fix a blocked or unusable page, tighten the answer, and a subsequent fetch can see the new version. Google works through its index: a change needs to be crawled, indexed and considered for the relevant passages and fan-out queries. **A live fetch offers a faster opportunity; an index change asks for more patience.** Neither gives you a guaranteed citation next week.

Freshness still deserves a place in the plan. In the ChatGPT analysis, cited URLs were [about 458 days newer than the average Google organic result](https://suparank.io/get-cited-by-chatgpt/). Another analysis found [pages updated in the previous 12 months were twice as likely to retain citations](https://searchengineland.com/measure-brand-visibility-ai-search-464524). Keep dates, offers and supporting details accurate because stale material is harder to trust and harder to quote. Do not turn “refresh” into changing a timestamp while leaving the answer untouched.

## Axis 5: What should you measure?

Stop counting rankings as a substitute for counting answers. A useful starting measure is prompt-based share: [Brand Visibility Score is the number of answers mentioning your brand divided by total answers, multiplied by 100](https://searchengineland.com/measure-brand-visibility-ai-search-464524). I calculate it separately for each engine. A blended number hides the very choice this head-to-head is meant to make.

Alongside mention rate, record whether the engine cites or links your page, how often two named competitors appear, and whether the answer recommends you or merely lists you. Run [25 to 50 buyer-intent prompts weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews](https://searchengineland.com/measure-brand-visibility-ai-search-464524) if you are tracking the wider field. For this three-engine decision, use the same relevant prompts and week for each contender, then log the date and answer link.

Prompt tracking tells you what the buyer saw. Crawler logs help you check whether your site was fetched. **Measure the answer and the route into it.** If the relevant fetch never happened, polishing the sentence you hoped it would quote is not the first fix.

## The verdict: pick the engine that matches the buyer

For a **local service business, I would start with Google AI Overviews**. If buyers are searching Google for a service near them, that is the answer surface to work on first. Build pages that answer the practical service questions clearly and give Google usable passages. ChatGPT and Perplexity can wait until there is evidence your buyers use them to make that choice.

For **B2B software or services, I would start with ChatGPT**. A buyer can describe requirements in a paragraph and ask for a shortlist. ChatGPT’s search-and-open process rewards a page it can reach and quote. Our own logs reinforced that priority for us: ChatGPT-User drove the large majority of live-answer fetches to our homepage. I explain the page work in [how to make pages fetchable and quotable for ChatGPT and Perplexity](https://groas.com/post/how-to-get-your-business-cited-in-chatgp); [the edge-log writeup](https://groas.com/post/stop-writing-faq-posts-to-get-cited-by-c) has the breakdown showing ChatGPT hit our homepage over 800 times while barely touching our blog index.

For **ecommerce, I would start with AI Overviews and put Perplexity second**. The cited-product-page click pattern gives Google the stronger first case; Perplexity’s footnotes make it a sensible next target for buyers comparing details. Perplexity loses my default first-place vote, but a business whose buyers already research and compare through its footnotes should pick it first. Likewise, a B2B company with local-intent pages should not neglect Google, and a local business seeing ChatGPT-heavy enquiries should fix its fetch path. Those are buyer-led exceptions, not permission to run one vague plan across all three.

## One month, one first engine

Do one engine properly instead of three badly. Keep the work in order:

1. **Week one: establish the baseline.** Take 30 buyer questions your sales conversations already answer. Run them once per engine, record mentions and citations, then choose the engine that matches where those buyers ask.
2. **Week two: fix access and the answer.** Use a crawlable page for each core offer. Do not hide the useful answer behind JavaScript alone. Check the relevant fetch path, then put a direct, 20-to-25-word answer under a plain question H2 where that shape fits. Support it with a current, useful number if you have one; do not invent one for the format.
3. **Week three: work on the winning engine’s weakness.** For ChatGPT, improve the page and the outside references to it rather than publishing more of the same. For AI Overviews, put the answer early, straighten out H1-H2-H3 order and use Product or FAQ schema where appropriate. For Perplexity, give a comparison-minded reader enough depth to justify opening your footnote.
4. **Week four: rerun the same prompts.** Compare mentions, citations and the answer text with week one. Check whether a fetch happened and whether the answer used your passage. No fetch points you toward retrieval or access. A fetch with no useful citation points you back toward the page.

That sequence is why I stopped treating citations as a content calendar and started treating them like media buying: choose the placement, inspect the route in, measure what appeared, then adjust. groas approaches search with continuous execution and a human strategist accountable for outcomes, not post count. Pick the engine your next ten customers are most likely to ask first. Win that one, then expand. Anything else is paying for coverage in rooms your buyers never enter.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite the same websites for the same question?

No. The three engines use different retrieval systems: ChatGPT pulls largely via Bing, Google AI Overviews draws on Google's index plus fan-out queries, and Perplexity uses its own crawler and index. In one comparison, only 11% of domains were cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity.

### Do I need to rank number one on Google to get cited in AI Overviews?

Not necessarily. In one ecommerce sample, AI Overviews pulled 83% of citations from pages outside the organic top 10. Pages that ranked for fan-out queries were 161% more likely to be cited than pages ranking only for the main query, so give Google direct answers to the adjacent questions buyers ask.

### How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT?

Make sure ChatGPT can retrieve the page first, largely via Bing, then give it something worth quoting. One analysis found 72.4% of cited pages had a link-free, 20-to-25-word answer capsule directly under a question H2, and 52.2% included original data. Retrieval gets you into the room; a clear, self-contained claim earns the line in the answer.

### Does publishing more pages improve my visibility in ChatGPT answers?

Off-site mentions matter more than publishing volume. One analysis found mentions of your brand elsewhere correlated 0.66 to 0.71 with ChatGPT visibility, while own-site page count correlated at only 0.194. One useful page that others discuss beats ten posts that repeat one another.

### What does a Perplexity citation look like for buyers?

Perplexity displays inline numbered footnotes that buyers can see and click beside the answer. Because readers can inspect the sources directly, a thin page has more chances to be exposed as thin. Give the reader enough substance to check the answer, not just a sentence designed to be lifted.

### Can a brand be used in an AI answer without getting a link?

Yes. In one large sample, 61% of Google AI Overviews answers used more sites than they credited, and ChatGPT's attribution is less predictable too. Track mentions separately from citations, because a buyer seeing your name on a shortlist is not the same event as a buyer clicking through to your page.

### How quickly do page changes show up in AI answers?

ChatGPT and Perplexity can fetch a changed page while answering a later prompt, so fixes can register on the next live fetch. Google AI Overviews works through its index, so a change needs to be crawled, indexed and considered for relevant passages and fan-out queries, which takes more patience.

### Which AI engine should a business optimize for first?

Start where your buyers already ask questions, then win that engine before chasing the other two. The article recommends Google AI Overviews first for local service businesses, ChatGPT first for B2B software and services, and AI Overviews with Perplexity second for ecommerce.
